#weekinreview - 26 August 2011

By Neil Durham, 26 August 2011

#News

GP news reporter Abi Rimmer (@Abi_Rimmer) looks at the issues likely to affect the future of out-of-hours care.

#Blogs

Paul Corrigan (@Paul_Corrigan), GP columnist, management consultant and former special adviser to Tony Blair, is always worth a read. This week he blogs:

When the BMA and the RCGP started to attack GP commissioning, the public were bemused about the government?s reasons for handing over all this power to GPs.

As we have seen over the last year this is very bad politics and will always undermine the case for reform. If the very people the government wants to take on new powers do not themselves want them, why should the public trust the government?s judgement?

#Twitter

Quirky GP-related thoughts from the Twittersphere this week include:

Young GP @LoquaciousDrM who tweets:

'I make a point of smiling at people on the way to work. It's meant to be infectious. Instead the miserable Londoners think I'm loopy'

BBC GP Dr Rosemary Leonard (@DrRosemaryL) tweets:

'Seven cases of chickenpox in surgery today, for my little patch of SE21, that's a lot'

Sir John Oldham (@SirJohnOldham), GP and national clinical lead for quality and productivity at the DoH and treasurer of ISQUA (International Society of Quality in Health Care), may be an acquired taste. He tweets:

'Research is only as good as implementation. Need balance in #ISQUA'
