5 Ways to Know It?s Time to See a Specialist

BY: Dr. Gordon J. Christensen

Not long ago, a dental turf war raged. In a letter to the editor of a local newspaper, an endodontist -- someone who specializes in treating deep tooth tissue problems -- claimed that complicated procedures like root canals should be done by endodontists and not general dentists. Naturally, many general dentists disagreed, and I do too.

But you don?t want to take risks when it comes to your dental health, so this begs the question: When should you seek a specialist for your dental treatment?

Here are five ways to know it?s time to leave your dentist?s chair and consider seeing a specialist:

  1. Your dentist is even a little hesitant to perform the procedure you need. If he wouldn?t perform it on a family member, he shouldn?t be performing it on you.
  2. The procedure is technically quite difficult. You can read up more on various dental procedures on the American Dental Association?s website, ADA.org.
  3. You?ve already experienced a failed attempt with a procedure.
  4. You?ve had good specialist treatment in the past and prefer to go that route.
  5. You have a relatively unknown condition.

But beware: Even though specialists undergo at least two to four years of additional education aside from completing a dental degree, going to an unknown specialist (who may charge more than your regular dentist) isn?t necessarily a better choice when you require complex treatment.

Some general dentists who take the time, pay for continuing education and have clinical experience can competently accomplish some of the procedures in all of the clinical dental specialties -- I see it routinely. But you can judge for yourself by having an open conversation with your dentist about how often he or she has done the procedure, what the results have been and what kind of education and training your practitioner has.
