Researchers find bowel cancer knowledge 'stubbornly low'

By Tom Moberly, 23 August 2011

On average, members of the public can name just one symptom of bowel cancer and one risk factor, a survey of over 1,550 people found. The poll was funded by Cancer Research UK.

Women were more aware of bowel cancer symptoms than men, but men were more aware of the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and taking exercise, the researchers found.

Commenting on the findings, study author Dr Emily Power said: ?This study reveals that the public?s awareness of bowel cancer symptoms is still stubbornly low, particularly among older adults who are at most risk of the disease.?

Dr Power said the poll showed there was a long way to go to ensure people understand the link between having a healthy lifestyle and cancer risk.

?Public health initiatives to increase awareness of risk factors are essential, and not only for lowering cancer risk,? she said.

?Improving attitudes towards healthy behaviour can go some way towards reducing other diseases triggered by unhealthy lifestyles.?
