LMC members must be included on health and wellbeing boards

In a guidance document on health and wellbeing boards the GPC said it has ?serious concerns? that LMC members have been excluded from the proposed membership of the groups.

It said LMCs are the only statutory organisation that democratically represent GPs and perform a ?crucial role? in negotiations between local authorities and the local profession.

The GPC said: ?LMCs would provide valuable input representing the views of the local profession independently from the local commissioning groups and will be central to ensuring clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) have the support and engagement of local practices.

?If an LMC has not been involved in the process thus far, they should actively seek engagement with the local authority.?

The GPC also said while it welcomes closer working between local authorities and CCGs it is important the health and wellbeing boards do not create ?unnecessary bureaucracy?.

It said health and wellbeing boards must therefore operate to encourage ?true partnership? between local authorities and CCGs and not just function as ?talking shops?.

It said the BMA is therefore calling for health and wellbeing boards to be ?small functional and representative bodies?.

It said: ?CCGs need to participate fully in the workings of the board and be prepared to participate fully in the workings of the board and be prepared to develop the mutually supportive relationships necessary for their success.?
