Practices forced to close because of IT issues

By Susie Sell, 19 August 2011

The failures meant 333 practices could not access patient records for almost five hours on Thursday, with the service going down at 8.30am. A further 446 suffered knock-on effects at 11am.

EMIS said the service resumed around 1pm and that the company has not identified any data loss as a result of the problems.

A spokeswoman said anecdotal evidence showed that some practices decided to close for morning surgery because of the problems, but other practices stayed open and used paper records during the problems.

She added: ?Our first priority at EMIS is and always has been our users and their patients. We recognise the vital role that EMIS systems plays in the efficient running of GP practices, and we apologise to affected users for this regrettable disruption to service.

'EMIS has now launched a detailed investigation into the incident, working closely with Connecting for Health and the suppliers of the data centre hardware.'
