Dr Kingsland: 'Some GPs are retiring early directly as a result of the transition period and the uncertainty'

Talking to GP, DoH national clinical commissioning network lead Dr James Kingsland said GPs are retiring 10 to 15 years early because of uncertainty around the NHS reforms.

He warned that further wrangling over the Health Bill could cause further confusion among the profession.

Dr Kingsland said the government must instead provide a ?clear, consistent and encouraging narrative? to dispel the ?myths? about the reforms.

He said: ?I have never experienced in my 23 years of practice the number of colleagues... retiring early. Some are retiring early directly as a result of the transition period and the uncertainty [about the reforms].

?For me the transition can?t end too quickly. The process of moving the Bill forward as timely as possible is vital.?

A BMA interim survey in June indicated that as many as 3,700 GPs will retire over the next two years as a result of the NHS reforms.
