Mr Prescott has promised to post a video of him singing if the e-petition gets up to 50,000 signatures.

Dr Chand, a GP in Greater Manchester, launched his petition earlier this month, which he hopes will force a parliamentary debate in the same way that fuel price campaigners managed earlier this month.

Mr Prescott commented on Twitter on Friday: ?If we get to 50,000 signatures on this bit.ly/xmasprezza I'll post a video of me singing. Promise! #xmasprezza?

It is not yet clear what his choice of song will be. The petition currently boasts more than 7,000 signatures and has already been backed by shadow health secretary Andy Burnham.
