Data: Uninsured Population Up 5.7 Million Since 2007

By Haydn Bush December 16, 2011

A new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation analyzes how the 2007-09 recession has impacted health insurance coverage for Americans.

In a new report analyzing the impact of the 2007-09 recession on health insurance coverage, the Kaiser Family Foundation reports that the number of uninsured Americans has risen by 5.7 million since 2007. All told, the number of uninsured Americans surpassed 49 million in 2010. However, there was a 1.5 percent increase in insurance coverage for young adults between 19-25 between 2009-10. The report speculated that the increase in coverage for young adults is tied to provisions of the Affordable Care Act that allow adults under 26 to remain on their parents' insurance.

The report also found:

  • Since 2000, the number of uninsured Americans has increased from 36.3 million to 49.2 million.
  • In 2010, 8 million children were uninsured, down from 8.6 million in 2007. The report argued that increases in coverage via Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program were partially responsible for the lowered number.
  • The percentage of Americans with employer-sponsored insurance has declined from 63.5 percent to 58.9 percent between 2007-2010. That drop has been partially offset by an growth in Medicaid coverage; roughly 14.4 percent of Americans are now covered by the program, up from 11.8 percent in 2007.
  • The share of the adult population that is uninsured rose from 19.1 percent in 2007 to 22 percent in 2010.
