Lord Howe: 'Every pound wasted is a pound that could be spent on treating patients'
The Steering Group to Improve the Use of Medicines will report in early 2012 and is aiming to tackle 300m lost every year as a result of medicines wastage.
The taskgroup has been set up in response to a report, published last week, of an event hosted by The King?s Fund. That event was itself held to consider a report into medicines wastage published in November 2011.
The group will be made of experts and patient representatives, the DoH said. It will be chaired by Robert Johnstone, a trustee of National Voices, and Rob Darracott, chief executive of Pharmacy Voice.Health minister Lord Howe said the work of the group was about helping ensure patients received the best outcomes from their medicines.
?Every pound wasted is a pound that could be spent on treating patients,? he said. ?By reducing medicine wastage the NHS will save money that can be spent in other areas of patient care.?
