The Latest Health News on Coffee

BY: Julie D. Andrews

It?s become a habit. Every morning, it seems I cannot think -- or sometimes even talk -- with any hope of making sense until I guzzle that dark, warm liquid known as my morning coffee. And it must be made just the way I like it (whole milk, no sugar), be strong as rocket fuel and jolt me to life within seconds.

Luckily, coffee?s frequent appearance in recent news headlines makes it the most socially accepted habit to boast about: Its antioxidant power can reduce the risk of breast cancer (according to a new study in Breast Cancer Research) and diabetes (according to an Archives of Internal Medicine study). And for guys, drinking 6 cups of the good stuff may reduce prostate cancer risk up to 60 percent, a recent Harvard study found.

Yet there?s a drawback to steady java consumption, and that?s stained teeth. Of course, you don?t need studies to tell you that. So what I?ll offer you instead are a few of my favorite time-tested tricks that allow me to perpetuate my healthy coffee habit:

  • Drink with straws. This way, you?ll completely avoid coffee coming into contact with your pearly whites.
  • Swish warm water. Normally, I would advise you to brush and floss after each cup of coffee to reduce strain-attacking plaque. But of course, that?s not always possible. So in those cases when you?re miles away from your toothbrush, I?ve found that a quick bathroom break to swish warm water will do. It?ll help dislodge and wash away any teeth-staining particles.

  • Eat fibrous fruits and vegetables. Not only do they boost your overall health, but thanks to their texture, they?re also wonderful tooth cleaners. Your best bet: celery, cucumbers, apples, pears, lettuce and broccoli.
