What Happens in Vegas…

By Matthew Weinstock February 16, 2012

What will "Wow!" you at HIMSS12?

?will not stay in Vegas, at least not next week. Yup, I'll be breaking the "Vegas Code" during my time at HIMSS12 by blogging, posting video and even tweeting. H&HN Daily will provide near wall-to-wall coverage of the mammoth information technology show, starting with a report from the CHIME Spring Forum and ending with what we hope will be a news-filled keynote by ONC chief Farzad Mostashari, M.D. In between, I'll be posting interviews with hospital CIOs, government officials and executives from innovative technology firms. We'll have person-on-the-street (or, in this case, exhibit floor) interviews, and, I'll provide my own color commentary to give those of you who couldn't make it to Vegas a sense of what's happening.

There's a lot of ground to cover at HIMSS ? literally and figuratively. To start with, ICD-10 will certainly be on the top of everyone's mind given the bombshell that CMS dropped earlier this week. Then there's all of the anticipation around Stage 2 meaningful use regs. Let's not forget how IT plays into accountable care/value-based purchasing/bundled payments/care coordination. Then there are the education sessions on everything from cloud computing to privacy and security to physician adoption of HIT. And finally, the exhibit floor. I've got a pair of well-cushioned shoes for walking between the 1,000-plus exhibitors that will be showing off their wares this year.

I'll also be on the look out for really cool technologies that will dramatically change the face of health care delivery. As I mentioned in a previous blog, we're researching a story that'll take a look at some of these apps, devices and systems. I'm not talking about the latest EMR upgrade or bar code scanner. No, we are looking for those "Wow!" technologies. Feel free to drop me a line ? mweinstock@healthforum.com ? if you stumble across one of those booths. I'll do my best to swing by.

H&HN Daily's coverage from HIMSS starts on Tuesday (we don't publish Monday due to the President's Day holiday).

Now, it's time to get back to my background/prep work.
