How Stressed Are You?

BY: Shana Aborn

Stress is part of life, and at times it can even be useful: It gives you that little nudge you need to get your notes in order before a presentation or the courage to stand up for yourself when you?ve been pushed around. But when there?s too much on your plate, especially at this have-the-perfect-holiday-or-else time of year, stress can show up in sneaky ways and make you feel miserable. Watch for these red flags, which tell you it?s time to tame that stress -- during the holidays and beyond.

  1. Your mind goes blank on routine tasks.

Researchers at Yale University have found that stress activates a brain enzyme that wreaks havoc on short-term memory and decision-making abilities. You may often lose things, like your keys, during tense times. But don?t stress even more: Just set up a bowl or hook near the front door to hold those wayward keys.
  1. You head for the mall more often.

When you?re under stress, you?re more likely to do things that temporarily make you feel good --like shopping. Before you pull out your credit card, ask yourself if you really need another pair of black pumps or that fifth gift for the kids. Financial experts confirm what we already know: Less debt translates to less stress.
  2. You take it out on your teeth.

If your jaw or head hurt when you wake up, chances are, stress is causing you to grind your teeth at night -- a habit that can do serious damage. Ask your dentist about getting a night guard, a transparent mouthpiece that fits over your teeth to limit the grinding. It?s an inexpensive solution (about $20) that can help you sleep better while reducing enamel damage and gum irritation.
  1. You can?t stop snacking.

Chips and candy are good momentary stress relievers, but it won?t be long until your scale and body say otherwise. There?s a strong link between stress and obesity: Researchers at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine recently found that social stress leads to overeating, longer meals and the accumulation of abdominal fat, which can increase your risk for heart disease. Limit yourself to small portions; better yet, go for a walk or have a glass of water when you?re tempted to nosh.
  1. You toss and turn.

Anxiety and tension can make it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep. Avoid eating or drinking alcohol close to bedtime, and switch off the laptop early -- bright computer screens interfere with your sleep cycle.
